Ladies, unless you're lucky enough to have never bought a present for a man in your life (and if this is the case, can you share your secret?), you'll be familiar with the ridiculously difficult task of trying to find a present for a fella. Managing to find a gift for a man that he won't eventually (and probably sooner rather than later) dump on a shelf or in the back of the drawer is like trying to find a needle in a haystack – pretty much impossible, no matter how hard you try! With women there are countless options, from beautiful (though admittedly rather unoriginal) flowers and yummy chocolates, right through to jewellery, clothes and perfume. It's true, none of these presents are particularly earth-shattering in their originality, but it's still true that these typical gifts are much more pleasant and happily received than the go-to present for men, which is, well... socks.

That's right, socks. We'll probably never know how or why a good old pair of socks became the traditional present that blokes find themselves landed with on Christmas morning as women and children gleefully open a whole variety of goodies. Useful, yes, but socks really aren't likely to inspire overwhelmed looks of joy upon the removal of the wrapping paper – at best you're going to get a vaguely cheerful 'well, they're certainly useful!' Not really the ideal reaction for a present is it?

It's true; men have a bit of a reputation of not helping themselves (or us!). I'm sure we've all asked our brother/father/uncle/granddad what they'd like for their birthday, hoping that this year they'll actually say something that wouldn't require a winning lottery ticket (you know the sort... sports car, new striker for Man U) and isn't a literal impossibility (we're talking 'a bit more hair up top', that kind of thing). Hilarious as these answers are, they go no way in helping us with the annual challenge of 'what on earth am I going to buy him this year?!' That is why so many blokes end up with novelty socks!

Though men are notoriously unhelpful when it comes to giving their unlucky loved ones any ideas for Christmas or birthday presents, there are a number of things you can look to for gift inspiration. Many men, for example, follow football and so football-related gifts - such as a personalised football book - are pretty likely to go down well! Whilst these are, however, miles better as gifts than a pair of singing Santa socks, a football shirt or golf accessories are once again in danger of falling well into the category of, well, uninspiring. There are, however, many gifts out there – for example a personalised football book – which play on the man in question's favourite sport or hobby, but have a unique little twist that take them from average to awesome!

For many men football is, if they're honest, the centre of their world. Though jobs and family and cars and so on are all very well and good, it's the beautiful game that really gets them going. Maybe we'll never really understand what it is about a bunch of blokes running round in shorts after a ball for 90 minutes that has the ability to turn grown men into quivering wrecks, holding each other and weeping into their supporter's scarves with either elation or misery. Whether it's a kick around in the park with their mates, a local derby, or even an England match, men are devoted to the beautiful game!

As well as being devoted to the game in general, most football fans are also dedicated followers of a particular club and a present involving this club is likely to be enjoyed and highly appreciated (much more than a pair of socks anyway!). A really lovely way to incorporate the club in question into a present is with a personalised football book.
