In our time we've all ourselves received a dodgy present from some poor misguided relative that's forced us to call on our very best GCSE drama skills and feign glee when ripping off the wrapping paper. You know the kind of thing we're talking about here... another selection of lavender scented bath soaps, a pair of novelty socks, or even a super-snazzy reindeer jumper complete with concealed battery pack and wildly flashing nose – thanks Nan! Every Christmas there's at least one questionable gift lurking under the Christmas tree, just waiting to be unwrapped and really put the acting skills of the 'lucky' recipient to the test!

That being said, buying the perfect present is never an easy task. No matter how well you know the person that you're vainly trying to find a great gift for, it's always difficult to confidently buy something you're completely certain they're going to be happy with and what's more cherish for years to come. Despite hours dragging yourself around the local shops, going from place to place in the hope that something will leap from the shelves and present itself with flashing lights as the ideal present for your loved one, many of us end up giving up and getting something that we haven't really got the foggiest whether they'll like or not.

As hard as buying presents is for anyone, buying presents for the men in your life is even harder. Whereas most women will be at least relatively happy with some new perfume or a bunch of flowers, men seem to be much harder to please. Short of giving up altogether and just handing over some cash (which, let's be fair, is pretty tempting when you're in the 43rd shop and still haven't found anything!) many end up opting for a good book.

As well as being pretty easy to wrap, books are actually a great choice for presents (unless the person in question passionately hates reading, in which case you might want to head back to the drawing board). Almost everyone enjoys a good read every now and then and buying someone a book; especially a personalised football book for a guy, is a great opportunity to introduce a loved one to the wonderful world of literature - easing them in slowly of course! As with most things in life, however, there are two sides to every story and buying a book can be a bit risky. Choice of reading material is very personal and unless you know someone and/or their reading habits especially well, you're not entirely unlikely to end up buying something that won't be read past the first chapter.
