Remember when you were at school and you and your classmates made cards for Mothers Day? Your mum was so pleased to receive that card that she kept it stuck on the fridge for ages (and maybe still has it safe in a keepsake box somewhere to this day?) It means so much to us when someone takes the trouble to create something unique by hand. Show your mother how much you care for and appreciate her by making Personalised Mothers Day Cards this year, just like you did at school (but without the spelling mistakes, they aren't cute anymore!)

Perhaps you have already had a go at making your own greeting cards using the many craft items available from specialist shops these days. Quite professional looking cards can be made with these by anyone with a bit of an artistic bent. Not so talented in that direction? If you have a computer with a half decent printer, Microsoft Publisher has a template for creating greeting cards from a folded A4 sheet. For the artwork you could use a digital photo of a family portrait or perhaps a landscape which evokes a particularly happy time or has a special meaning for your Mother. If you feel that even this is beyond you, beautiful Personalised Mothers Day Cards can be purchased which are blank inside ready for your own meaningful message.

What to write inside though? People often feel embarrassed at expressing their feelings to loved ones and end up buying a greeting card with someone else's sentiments inside, often quite schmaltzy and not really what they wanted to say. The recipient reads the formulaic message inside and struggles to relate to the second hand meaning, perhaps even discounting the words as being just part of a pretty looking card. Or are you one of those people who think that if you buy the biggest card in the shop it will show that you really care?

Why not have a go at expressing genuine heart-felt feelings specifically addressed to your mother. "Thank you for everything you have done for me" will not do, however, it is way too general and the danger is this will not sound sincere, just like the sentimental rhymes in the bought cards. Try to make it about something specific. Here's an example: Perhaps you have young children yourself and your mother often acts as an unpaid child minder. She enjoys this, of course, but doesn't it make your life easier too? So "thanks Mum for all the time you spend with (grandchild). It's such a help to me to be able to get on with something, knowing (grandchild) is safe and cared for. It's wonderful too, to see the bond between you and obvious how much she benefits from your undivided attention".

Perhaps you don't have a family of your own yet and still live at home. Hopefully you help out with the housework but your mother still does many things for you that she may feel you take for granted. Show her you do notice and appreciate these things. "Thanks for ironing my shirt when I was late for (friend's) party"; "thanks for encouraging me to go for that job/ holiday/car"; "I know you were disappointed when I (whatever) but you stood by me anyway. It made all the difference, thanks." Once again, simply saying "you are the best Mum in the World" sounds too much like a cop out. You need to show her you notice what she does that's special and to tell her how she is so important to you. If you can think of a memory that you share of a particularly happy time or perhaps a difficulty she helped you overcome, or a shared sorrow that you helped each other through: These are all things you could mention to illustrate how you feel about your mum and the special relationship you have with her with Personalised Mothers Day Cards. It will mean so much more to her than a bog standard card and doesn't she deserve that?

Finally, if you really don't think you have what it takes to create Personalised Mothers Day Cards yourself, there are web sites specialising in personalised gifts and cards including personalised Mothers Day cards. There are different designs to choose from, which you can have personalised at least with your mother's name if not a special message, showing you care enough to think ahead and arrange something more than just the usual trip to a card shop. Good luck and really make an effort this year!
