It's one of the most romantic days of the year; your anniversary. The day which marks another year of wedded bliss to the man or woman you love. Anniversaries get more exciting every passing year and they're traditionally celebrated with a different significant item. There's Pearl for the 30th, Ruby for the 40th and after 50 years of happy marriage, finally, gold.

It doesn't matter how many years you've been married to your husband or wife, you'll still need to plan ahead if you want to surprise them and make their day extra special. It's a common joke that some men forget wedding anniversaries; but most men know better! If you're the sort of person who often does forget, it's never too late to start showing your spouse how much you adore them.

We all have our quarrels too. No couple has a perfect relationship all the time, your anniversary is a great time to let your partner know that despite any arguments or silly disagreements, you still love them just as much today as you did the day you married them.

Choosing Gifts

There is a huge range of ways to spend your anniversary. In fact, how you spend your special day is entirely up to you. It can also cost as much as you want it to, or as little. You can choose to buy expensive anniversary gifts or save your money for more practical things and still have a good time!

In London there are free, open air plays during the summer months and there might be similar gigs and performances in your area. If that doesn't tickle your fancy there are lots of other things you can enjoy together for free. Even a drive to the top of a local hill to look down on the twinkling city lights can be romantic. The most important thing is spending time together.

There are countless websites online selling boring anniversary gifts, but the best presents will surpass generic romantic expectations. Pretty items with special messages engraved in to them make good anniversary gifts, so do special days out.
It's also now possible to buy gift certificates for all sorts of activities, they're called experience days and they make perfect anniversary gifts. One specific type of gift card lets the receiver choose which activity they'd like to do, themselves. So, you could attend a cookery demonstration, have a pamper day for two or do a number of other fun things together.
Creating a Mood

Apart from any anniversary gifts you buy for your husband or wife, you'll also need to spend some quality time together. Regardless of whether you decide to stay in or go out, you'll want to set the tone for the evening and impress your other half.

If you're home it will be easy to choose music that makes you both happy and relaxed. You can even play the song which you took your first dance to on your wedding day. If you go to a restaurant you could request that they quietly play it for you on the night, or play it in the car on the way there.

When it comes to food, choose a style of cooking which you both enjoy and maybe even something you've eaten together before. Don't go for something you eat regularly because it won't be very exciting, but choosing something indulgent and delicious will help you to both feel more romantic.

Scents are also something that can help set the tone for the evening. Wearing an unusual perfume or aftershave your partner loves is a good idea. So is making sure your house smell warm and comfortable if you're staying in for the night. Some people thing that a rose scent is very romantic. Even if you have a meal at home, you don't have to stay in all night.

You can still star gaze, visit a local place of interest or see something which reminds you both just how beautiful the world can be.

Affection and Attention

More than any other day, your anniversary is obviously an important time to listen to your spouse's views and wrap them up in love. After all, there aren't any better anniversary gifts than hugs and kisses. Let your partner know how unique and wonderful they are. You could also thank them for all those little helpful things they do around the house.

Celebrating another year of a good marriage can be wonderful and showing mutual appreciation, love and respect can be so replenishing and invigorating.
