So, they're saying adios to their 20s and you're helping them? You want them to have a great time and you want to get them the best 30th birthday gifts ever! You want to see your friend or relative laugh so hard that they cry and wake up feeling happy and refreshed the next day, having had a brilliant 30th birthday party. The real question is: how do you make it a quirky, memorable and fun day?

You'll need a camera to get plenty of photos of everyone having fun, some tasty drinks and some yummy food. Don't forget a DJ too, even if that turns out to be more of a CD skivvy than a disk jockey. Whatever else you plan, such as games or events will be a plus!

If you've got some extra money it can be great to hire a performer such as a magician or a living statue. They can bring some extra life to the party and entertain the guests but they can also help you to propose a toast to the birthday person or bring in the birthday cake.

Surprise parties

There's a tradition of surprise parties. You all know the deal, there's all the planning ahead, deception and subterfuge. You tell their friends to come along and you decorate the space you've chosen together. You keep the party a secret until the second that the birthday person comes in the door. Then, you all shout 'Surprise!' and give them the fright (and delight) of their life!

It's comforting and flattering to know that your friends and family love you enough to throw you a surprise party and it's the effort involved which is the real gift, although, all the real 30th birthday gifts do matter too.

Planning the space, decorations, food and music and getting in enough beer or wine to make the party memories a little bit blurry the next day are what truly take thought. For a really quirky party idea you could throw a surprise fancy dress ball, a football themed party or something else that will make your friend or relative grin.

All of that effort will be appreciated by the person whose birthday you're celebrating and there's really only one rule to keep in mind. The birthday boy or girl isn't allowed to clear up the morning after!

Adventure awaits

A person's 30th birthday comes but once a life time and as they reach the day, they may look back at all the fun they had in their 20s and fear that it's a departure. 20 year olds are not the same as they used to be.

Two generations ago most people wed in their early 20s (sometimes even younger) and they had families by the time they were thirty. These days' people are choosing to marry later, often having fun, studying during their 20s and only just starting their careers.

The prospect of leaving behind fun, education and possibly even partying can worry a 30 year old but it needn't because age 30 is the start of a decade traditionally filled with adventure. Many 30 years olds choose to go on adventure holidays and learn new skills.

They might take up skiing, wind surfing or even try their hand at learning to play the guitar. There's just as much out there to enjoy in your 30s as there was in your 20s. Only now you have the experience and wisdom to back up your drive and energy.

When you're considering 30th birthday gifts why not look in to experience days and see if there are any adventure experiences, such as sailboat racing, a flying lesson or skydiving that your friend or relative might fancy.
