If you've ever walked in to a gift store and thought: "Oh, that'd be a good present." Then, turned around and thought: "And so would that and that." And been overcome by the demon of indecision that stops you from buying anything at all in case you get your loved one or friend something they won't like; then fear not. There's a really simple way to pick out birthday gifts for those wonderful, multi-talented types.

Instead of getting someone you care about one large present on their birthday you could give them several smaller birthday gifts and 'bag them up.' That's always a good idea when you know someone who has tons of different interests. It can be a useful way of working out what they really like above all else because by combining cheap presents you can ask which of the small presents was that person's favourite and then next time you'll have a better idea what sort sorts of thing your friend most likes to receive.

It's like market research in that respect, because next time you'll have a better idea what to get them. However, in the mean time you'll get them enough small, but cool and funky presents that one of them is bound to appeal!

Any birthday gifts which you buy for someone will typically need to cost a set amount. So you probably have a budget in mind already on how much you'd like to spend on a friend or relative. If you're stuck for ideas you could get a sheet of paper and brain storm.

Brain storming is just writing out thoughts and ideas without stopping yourself because you think they might seem silly and then you can pick through the rubbish ideas and find the golden ones. To brain storm about birthday presents just write down things that pop in to your head when you think of that person. That way, perhaps you'll think of their love for chocolate, because you both ordered chocolate cake at the coffee shop last time you met up. Or maybe you'll remember them saying they love a specific footballer when you were in the pub watching a game. It could even be something as simple as them saying that they were fond of a certain type of plant last time you were in the park together.

Remembering things which people have said that they like is something that women are supposedly better at than men. Recently, several studies showed that the way which women's brains remember things (especially from conversation) differs from the way the male brain does. So, if you're a guy and you're struggling to come up with gift ideas for someone, it's not because you don't care or don't think about things enough, it might be the way that your brain has been wired. By brain storming and grabbing a pencil and paper you might actually unearth hidden treasure; little bits of information about someone you care about which you'd inadvertently forgotten about.

Then, once you have a list of birthday gifts that the birthday person might like you can get online and find competitively priced, really good presents that fit the things you remember them liking. You can get loads of great birthday gifts for under £5 each and then combine them to make the ultimate present for anyone.

We don't want to bog you down with too many ideas of birthday gifts you can get for friends and relatives, but it might be helpful to let you know some of the things that are out there for under £5 each. For a friend who is clumsy and always seems to be getting scraped, some novelty plasters can make a really fun present and they're available in kissy lip shapes as well as some really cool and funky shapes and patterns, there are multicoloured and arty designs and even some with skulls and crossbones on.

Or, if you have a friend who loves a beer then you could get them a Beer Monkey as one of their birthday gifts. No, it's not a monkey who is trained to serve beer, sadly it's just a pad which you put in your fridge to stack up beer bottles and stop them from rolling around!
