Baby blankets, picture frames, personalised plates! Throughout the years, christening gifts have always been thoughtful and sentimental and if you're trying to find one for a new arrival in your life then we're here to help.

There are as many different kinds of christening gifts out there as there are different kinds of Christians! Some people opt for a very simple low key affair while others want to celebrate their child's baptism in a big way, throwing elaborate functions after the church event and having a shin dig.

Equally, some of the christening gifts out there are very religiously symbolic and others are less religious and more sentimental. Whatever taste the family has there is bound to be something perfect for their tiny tot. So, sit back, relax and let us tell you how easy buying christening gifts can be!

Showing you're Committed
By getting gifts for a baby on their christening you're showing that you're committed to caring for the baby and emotionally invested in their upbringing. It's a wonderful time and by declaring your affections and attentions for the small child you're helping to shape their future.

As such, traditionally it's only the godparents and the grandparents of the child who need to buy gifts. However, these days many of us feel like celebrating the birth of a new child and if we don't do it at the baby shower or immediately after the baby is born, we're bound to want to buy a christening gift instead. If you want to get the baby or the baby's parents a gift, go right ahead. Some traditionalist families might find it odd, but they'll love the thought and care regardless and everyone loves to receive presents!

Choosing the Gifts
If you're a relative you may want to opt for religiously symbolic christening gifts for the baby. That could be anything from a beautiful baby blanket embroidered with a Christian cross and the name of the child to something as subtle as a Noah's ark money box with a message inscribed in to the silver plated side of the piece. You can come up with your own message, use part of a poem, a famous quote or even take inspiration from the bible.
For less religiously inclined attendees who still want to show support in their own way there are loads of colourful and fun gifts for children which would be just as suitable. While a space hopper wouldn't be! A children's digger style money box would be just fine and so would a half pint pewter tankard engraved with a message of love. The most important thing at a christening is that the parents are congratulated and that the baby is baptised and celebrated, christening gifts will always be a low priority by comparison!

Alternative Options
We love gifts and think it's hard to beat them but there are lots of alternative options when it comes to christening gifts which are still worth considering. Some families like to hand down patchwork quilts or hand make christening gifts for that personal touch and often godparents set up small savings accounts or trusts to pay a little cash in to yearly for their grandson or granddaughter. Not all godparents do that though and it's definitely not a requirement christening gifts are more than enough.

If you're going to a christening with a buffet style reception, the parents of the child could even ask that you bring a gift of food to contribute to the buffet (especially if you bake really good cakes!) and there are lots of other ways to muck in with the celebrations other than buy buying gifts. Then again, picture frames which say 'christening' on them and feature a small cross and other nice keepsakes start at just £5 each so if you want to buy a gift it's easy and affordable.

The Parents
Because some families choose to combine the baby shower and the christening in to one big bash, sometimes guests bring gifts for the parents of the baby too. If the baby's parents are your close friend then that could be an opportunity to really make them feel great by giving them a bottle of personalised champagne or even buying them a pamper experience day, where they can go away and relax together while someone else in the family takes care of the new born. After all, new babies don't just mean christenings; they mean sleepless nights, nappy changing and endless feeding too. Add the mild stress of arranging a christening to that and you have a couple who really deserve some time to relax and unwind!
