Whenever I go on a shopping spree in the local High Street I am always amazed at how many extremely pregnant women there are, slowly sidling around the stores, looking exhausted, but determined to carry on shopping. These are only the tip of the iceberg. Many other expectant mothers miss my gaze because of baggy clothing or the fact that they are still in the early stages. Having babies is as popular these days as it ever was. I have 3 friends who are all at the waddling duck stage and one niece who has just delivered a really cute baby girl. I attended her baby shower, which involved giving a gift, and I noticed that most people gave the mum-to-be baby clothes, pretty nick knacks for the nursery, and all those sweet smelling bottles of baby bath items too. But the baby will soon have grown out of all those clothes and the bathroom goodies will be exhausted.

I am usually quite creative with gift ideas for most other occasions, but thoughts and ideas on christening gifts are really limited form me. Perhaps it is because I have only attended a handful of christenings that I am often unsure as to what to give as a christening gift. Despite the number of babies that are clearly about to make their presence felt in the world, there are surprisingly few christenings or other significant ceremonies to mark the special occasion these days. More commonly, the birth of a child means the giving of a gift, without the christening. However, my friend has invited me to share the occasion of her baby's christening in a few weeks time, and I have spent many hours wondering what I can possibly give as a christening present to such a special friend, but have now realised that it is all about giving something to the baby, something that can be loved and cherished forever by this little person as she grows bigger, learns to walk and talk, attends nursery, primary and high school. With this in mind, it is so much easier to choose from the huge selection of christening presents that are available. A keepsake is so precious and means so much to both the recipient and the person who is doing the giving. The star of the show might well be tiny, and not have any memory of the big event that celebrates his or her arrival, but christening presents that can be kept forever will be important to this person. Traditionally, christening presents consisted of silver spoons engraved with the baby's name, date of birth and date of christening ceremony. Thank goodness things have become a bit more exciting since then. Nowadays christening presents are not restricted by the serious limitations and need to stick to tradition, and if it is something that will last and looks fantastic, it will make the perfect of christening presents.

If you like to stick with traditional christening gifts, an Engraved Crystal Christening Book makes a beautiful keepsake.
