On Christmas day most living rooms become multicoloured battlefields, strewn with the entrails of packaging and littered with the shrapnel of discarded sweet wrappers. Adults lay prostrate on the couch whilst the kids engage each other with their most precious Christmas gifts. Eventually as the afternoon wears on and the lunch has settled, slightly, you'll start looking for things to do with the rest of the day before the TV turns your brain into a soup made mostly of figgy pudding smothered in ice cream. It is at this point that you may realise that you haven't bought any Christmas gifts suitable for keeping the whole family merry during the long winter days cooped up inside and you'll silently chide yourself for lacking foresight. But, never fear, as it is still months away from December 25th, so you have plenty of time to get all of your shopping done and ensure that the Christmas merriment is maintained all day.

One of the best ways to return your brain to normal on Christmas day is with a good old fashioned mental workout and what better way to do that than with a Christmas gift? Though board games usually fit the bill, a real boffin would love an IQ test. Inside the pack is a selection of interesting information and the test itself is sealed and only usable by a single individual. Once you're done you can just pop it in the post and get a certificate a few days later with your IQ result. If you've got a friend or relative who is always full of useless trivia or who has a head for numbers and logical thinking then a cleverer Christmas day is a sure thing.

While parents will obviously tire of being practical after a night spent frantically wrapping presents one handed whilst balancing a mince pie and a glass of eggnog in the other, kids will need amusement beyond the audio visual delights of Zulu on the TV. Though getting your kids to be arty can seem like a chore at Christmas, there are Christmas gifts that allow them to be creative without too much supervision. One undeniable hit will be a paint your own pyjamas set, particularly amongst the girls. You will probably need to get some newspaper on the table before you let them have at it, but with water soluble fabric paints included even if it gets onto their clothes it will wash out without much of a fight. Once the tiring day has come to a close the lure of bed will become all that more attractive for the kids if they can snuggle up in their own personalised pyjamas. And since the PJs are colour fast, any over exuberance with the designs can be corrected easily, providing your child with a fresh canvas to start again. In this modern age when so many Christmas gifts will be DVDs or games, chances are that kids will want to watch their presents all afternoon. If you are able to give Christmas gifts that get them away from the TV and using their minds it has got to be beneficial to their development. It will also let the grown-ups watch the EastEnders Christmas special in peace, although you may also have to dissuade any male members of the household from putting on their complete box set of Footballs Biggest Blunders.

It is undeniably tempting to stay indoors all day on Christmas day, only venturing outside in order to make your way to a relatives house and chow down on some more good food. There are some excellent Christmas gifts that you might purchase in order to shake off the cobwebs in the great outdoors, though. Perhaps getting a male family member a leather football will help to coax him and the kids outside for a bit of a kick about and aid in burning off all those empty calories. For the green fingered, a packet of seeds might be just the incentive to make merry in the garden, though in all honesty the prospect of hard ground and red noses will need some getting used to.
At the end of the day you should make your Christmas gifts count towards the whole Christmas experience. By integrating Christmas gifts into the fun and merriment of the day itself you are more likely not only to have fun as a family but also give memorable Christmas gifts. Christmas day can become a better experience simply by introducing some new activities that get you out of your chairs and you might even consider buying gifts that are for everyone, rather than just for individuals.
