Christmas Ideas For The Whole Family To Enjoy | Christmas Ideas from GettingPersonal.co.uk
Christmas is marketed as a family occasion. From early Autumn each year we are inundated with images of happy, smiling families sitting down to enjoy their Christmas dinner together, seemingly unperturbed by the scenes of chaos as the turkey was cooked that we all know preceded it. People travel en masse to visit relatives for the Christmas holiday period, flying thousands of miles just to be able to sit down on Christmas morning with a loved one, even if it is just for that one day.
The importance of spending Christmas with family is reinforced in every media, from touching stories in magazines to television sitcoms, Christmas cards, carols and films. However, the one aspect of Christmas which does not necessarily encourage or even imply togetherness is arguably the most universal aspect of the whole occasion – presents.
Christmas presents are almost always tailored to an individual's needs. With the exception of birthdays, Christmas is the main occasion in which a person has the pleasure of unwrapping something made or purchased especially for them, which they alone will then spend the entire day enjoying whilst their friends and family do the same. How many Christmas evenings are spent in relative silence as the children each play with their new treasured toys, mum and dad read their books whilst wearing their new slippers, lovers try on their new clothes and jewellery and even pets sit quietly in the corner gnawing at their over-sized novelty bone?
With all the importance that the holiday places on family togetherness,
Christmas ideas
for gifts which the whole family can enjoy are somewhat sparse and perhaps a little cheesy. Of course, if executed correctly, cheesy family orientated gifts can actually possess the power to transform your family into the vision of those smiling, loving faces gazing fondly from the Christmas card on the mantelpiece.
One of the most traditionally cheesy
Christmas ideas
which the whole family can enjoy is that of board games. Board games make an excellent Christmas gift for families for a number of reasons. Firstly, several people are usually required to play the game and families inherently fulfil this role. By virtue of sharing a place to live, families are always in a position to play board games without anybody having to go out of their way to make special arrangements to battle through ice and snow just to sit and play snakes and ladders.
Secondly, families tend to have naturally occurring alliances and affectionate grudges which can turn a simple board game into an epic battle for supremacy, as landlords bankrupt their clients with extortionate rates on red, plastic hotels and the resident beauty contest winner gets sent straight to jail. Finally, Christmas Day in particular tends to have a natural lull in activity in the early evening. Usually filled with solitary activity, a board game is a great way to bring everybody back together to have a laugh and release some tension from the day gone by.
Being firmly associated with eating, whether it's too many mince pies, too much turkey at dinner or too much cheese and crackers, food is one of the best
Christmas ideas
which can be enjoyed by individuals and families alike. A varied food hamper is not only thoughtful but also useful and sure to be appreciated by the whole family. Likewise, jars of retro sweets would make an excellent present for families to enjoy in the relaxed environment of Christmas evening; as everyone samples their favourite candy, mum and dad can reminisce about their own childhoods.
As well as material gifts intended for use on Christmas Day, there are a number of Christmas ideas which involve taking the whole family out for a day to experience something new and exciting. For the more adventurous types, a paintballing day is an experience which really benefits from the natural dynamics of family life. Kayaking experiences and family outings to Alton Towers are just some of the #Christmas ideas available to get the whole family together outside of the house for a change. But if, after all this togetherness, everybody would like to take a break from all the action without becoming isolated, a family trip for four to the cinema is a pleasant and peaceful way to while away a chilly winter afternoon.
There are so many Christmas ideas intended for individual use that family orientated gifts can sometimes go unnoticed. However, if you're lucky enough to be able to spend time with your family this Christmas remember that the reason families on television and Christmas cards are all beaming with fulfilment is because they are not only having fun by themselves but because they are enjoying doing something together, as a family, on Christmas Day.
