Devote a Day to Your Dad | Father's Day Gifts from GettingPersonal.co.uk
3 June 2009
Father's Day is based on a long standing tradition and it is celebrated by millions of people around the world on different days of the year. It was in the 20th century that Father's Day first originated and it was first widely celebrated in the US.
Some historians say that it was initially created to complement Mother's Day which had come from an old christian tradition. However, Mother's Day had began to transcend religion and ethnicity and had spread all over the world. So, Father's Day seemed a logical addition to the calendar. In some countries Father's Day falls on June 15th and in others it is enjoyed on the 21st, but here in the UK we celebrate
Fathers Day
on the third Sunday of June each year.
That's ideal because most dads don't work on a Sunday and it means we can spend the whole day making them feel great!
The History of Father's Day
In 1908, Robert Web an American minister created the first ever recorded Father's Day, in Fairmont,West Virginia. The roots of Father's Day are based on caring for and giving thanks to our dads and now it is the one day of the year when you are compelled to thank him for all he has done to help you throughout the years.
It was a woman however, in 1909, that first put forward the plans to make Father's Day an official, regular event and her name was Sonora Smart Dodd. It was while she was listening to a sermon at her local church for Mother's Day that the idea struck her.
After all, why should mums get to have all the fun? Fathers spend a lot of time and energy raising their children too and Sonora thought that it would be very fitting for men to be celebrated and shown gratitude in exactly the same way.
Special Surprises
Sometimes the best gifts are those we don't expect. That means it can be really powerful and meaningful if you surprise your dad and make a special effort for him. The less he thinks he'll get this year the more overjoyed he will be when he finds out you got him a cool present or are taking him out for a meal.
You don't have to do anything too extravagant because with
Fathers Day
it really is the thought which counts and so long as you spend some quality time with him and tell him you love him he'll have a great time. You can buy cards from shops but consider making your own with a personal image on the front or an 'in-joke' inside it and he'll appreciate the time you've spent to make him smile.
If you do want to surprise your dad on Father's Day with something more impressive, you could go around to his home for a surprise party with some other family members, take him out to play his favourite game or help him to do some DIY which he has been meaning to get around to. Whatever you do, as long as you're putting in some effort he'll love you for it.
Around the World
In other cultures Father's Day is celebrated a myriad of different ways. Perhaps you might be inspired by the Costa Ricans for example who have their Father's Day the same day as the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker and enjoy grand vegetarian feasts. Or you could be tempted to celebrate like the Germans and go hiking together then enjoy some hearty food and drinks in the outdoors.
As Father's Day takes place in the warmth of early Summer you could really take advantage of the weather and go on a nature trail, set up a family barbeque or go for a picnic at a nature reserve. Fishing is also a great way to spend the day, especially as you can barbeque your bounty when you've caught it.
Traditional Events
Over all, Father's Day is what you make of it and that's great because it means that you can create your very own family tradition. You can bond with your loved ones and each year Father's Day can become a day on the calendar worth looking forward to and anticipating fondly.
Creating your own traditions is important because with busy schedules and little time for leisure all of us forget to spend time with the people we love these days. Don't let
Fathers Day
be just another day of the year, because it isn't. Surprise your dad, get your family together and do something really fun.
