In 1909 she proposed the idea of the special day to celebrate and honour her father - a Mr William Smart, who was a veteran of the Civil War, and widowed with six small children! When Mrs Dodd grew up to be an adult herself she realised just how selfless her father had been in raising them all, and she named the 19 June after him in 1910. Mrs Dodd was boosting a new trend in fact, with other towns across America starting to celebrate the new festival of Father's Day.... and it was finally formalised in 1966 by President Lyndon, with the date in America moving to 3 July.

Nowadays it's celebrated upon different days across the world, and is designed to honour all the positive male figures in a person's life - fathers, step-dads, uncles and grandads!
