Buy, sell or exchange - Gifts you'll want to hold on to

Thanks to the rise in the popularity of auction sites, there are now so many different opportunities for buying and selling gifts, getting rid of unwanted rubbish that's been laying around in the loft for years, and even finding the odd valuable antique or two. After all, when it comes to the buying and selling of second hand items - such as gifts - one person's rubbish is another person's treasure!

Established in the US in 1995, eBay is arguably now a worldwide phenomenon; there are now a significant number of auction sites in a diverse selection of countries, including India, Japan, Austria, France, Hong Kong and Israel. However, in Japan the service exists as a joint venture with Yahoo! And interestingly, while the site is now a popular place for finding all sorts of gifts - whether that's a gift for yourself, or a gift for another individual - the very first product sold on the site was actually a broken laser pointer. In addition to the standard auction-style format, it is also possible to list items - such as gifts- either in a fixed-price format, or in the style of a Dutch auction.

However, there are many gifts and other items of treasure that don't appear on any other auction site, quite simply because they are too good to get rid of. After all, if you've just received some wonderful gifts from either a friend or a loved-one, you're hardly going to post them online! The same holds true for the person actually doing the giving; when you spend so much money and time search for the right gifts for that special person, seeing them appear on an auction site at some undefined point in the future is not something you want to see.
