December 25th – the day that most of us eagerly anticipate, waiting for the delights of late breakfasts, boxes of chocolates in front of Christmas TV and the scent of the Christmas tree mingling deliciously with turkey, stuffing and of course, the brandy-butter topping off the Christmas pudding. But there's one man who doesn't feel the same sense of relaxation and peace as the rest of us – Santa Claus. Busy beavering away, continent-hopping and delivering presents to every country and every possible time zone, he's got no time to relax and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.

So, this Christmas, give Santa a break and try coming up with some great stocking fillers without help from everyone's favourite bearded man.

The best stocking fillers are thoughtful and interesting, with a good dose of humour to keep the surprises coming all the way down the stocking! Great ideas for all ages include chocolate coins and sweets – these always go down a treat with everybody. Another great Christmas Day stocking filler is to include something that can be used on the day, especially with occupying bored children or guests (heaven forbid!) Colouring books for the kids are always a winner as a stocking filer, especially when accompanied with a shiny new set of colouring pens or pencils. Rather than have to put up with the inevitable sugar-induced crash sometime around 4pm, give the kids a colouring book featuring one of their favourite cartoon characters and watch as they go from whining, problematic ankle-biters to well-behaved, polite children again!

Stocking fillers like 'Grow Your Own' Christmas trees, made from crystals that grow before your eyes when water is added, is perfect to fill up fifteen minutes for all the family (perhaps if there's a slight dilemma with the turkey basting!) and a particular favourite is our own 'Build Your Own Lamborghini' set, which seems to keep both children and grown men happily entertained for hours! And the 'Grow Your Own Money' plant is sure to be a hit in these financially unstable times – hopefully one will be popped into the PM's stocking this Christmas as well.

Another great idea for stocking fillers are photo albums, preferably Christmas-themed, so that snaps from the day can be treasured forever. Stationery is a handy gift and a great hint to the kids to remember to write their 'thank you' letters – it can be personalised with their names to add that extra-special touch. Matching pens, pencils and notebooks are great accessories for this sort of thing and mean that their owner won't lose them in a hurry!

For the girls, stocking fillers like make-up and beauty products are a sure-fire hit – try out flavoured novelty lip glosses for the 'fun factor' to your stocking – and it'll go perfectly with those lovely new Christmas clothes that all your female relatives are sure to have bought! Bath products are also a great little stocking filler and can be tailored to any sort of person – novelty-shaped soaps are appropriate for all ages and bubble baths continue the feeling of relaxation that Christmas Day should inspire (though not if the mammoth task of cooking the turkey dinner has anything to do with it!)

The mark of great stocking fillers, no matter how small, is their personal appeal and the fact that some thought has been put into them – it really is the thought that counts! It is so easy to personalise stocking fillers, for instance, rather than buying a bog-standard mug as a present, try one with a witty message on it. Even the most pragmatic, useful and seemingly boring gifts can be turned into a much-appreciated one if a personal touch is added – for example, for car enthusiasts, a simple USB memory stick becomes a great novelty stocking filler as well if it's shaped like a VW Beetle! Or, instead of just a normal money box, point out someone's rather well-known penchant for bad language by getting them one of our Swear Boxes. Every family has someone rather more foul-mouthed than the rest and stocking fillers like this can turn an inside joke between families into a real self-improvement project, making a perfect tie-in for New Year's Resolutions, too!

As Santa well knows, crafting stockings is more than just shoving any random junk that you can find down an old sock. It's about the careful selection of stocking fillers that suit the personality and tastes of the person receiving the stocking, about being thoughtful and picking gifts which highlight parts of their character and above all, about having a lot of light-hearted fun – the perfect start to Christmas Day.
