How To Be More Original With Your Mothers Day Cards | Mothers Day Cards from GettingPersonal.co.uk

I Love You, Mummy; World's Best Mum; To A Wonderful Mum; Happy Mothers Day: we challenge you to find any Mothers Day Cards in the shops that don't have one or other (or more) of these slogans emblazoned on them. And if we've noticed, Mum will have, too.

If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, then the way to a woman's heart is through carefully thought-out and planned gifts, which includes everything down to the card. Mothers Day cards are all fine and lovely and, yes, it's the thought that counts, but going by that measure, wouldn't it be better to do something different to show just how special your mum is to you?

There's only one way of really blowing your mum away this Mothers Day: make your own card and couple it with an appropriate and thoughtful gift. Mothers Day cards aren't hard to make – any cards are fairly easy. Whichever of the following ways you elect to do it, you'll need some good, sturdy card: an A4 sheet of 150-200gsm paper or card will do (don't worry about what gsm means, just buy some thick stuff). Then it's down to you. If you're of an artistic bent, perhaps you can decorate it yourself – make it a collage of lovely patterns, draw or paint a design on or even go for one of the old slogans above; the fact that you took the time to make it will speak volumes. The other alternative and a bit trickier if you're not technologically minded, is to print a design onto one half of the A4 sheet (below where you'll fold it). You can either create a design in the computer or just use a photo you think Mum will like: a family snap, one of you and her or just a nice landscape.

Creating your own cards can be as simple or as difficult as you like: you can make an ornate patchwork of all her favourite things or write out a favourite poem or passage that means something to you, her or both of you. Leave yourself time to do it justice, though – making Mothers Day Cards isn't about throwing something together at the last minute because you forgot to nip to the shops. Well-made cards are carefully thought through ahead of time and planned to suit the tastes, humour and style of the recipient. It's your chance to show your mum that you love her so much you don't want her to have any old card from a shop and that you know her so well you can create a card she'll want to treasure forever.

The trick to really making an impact is to pair one of your homemade Mothers Day cards with the perfect Mothers Day gift. Far be it for anyone to tell you what you should be buying – you know your mother better than anyone (or you should!) – but there are a few nice touches around. The Dear Mum – From You to Me book (part of the Dear X series of books) is a nice way for your mum to share a bit of history with you. If you're after something more practical, Uggs are in fashion, although I'd always go for the cosier Microwaveable Cream Cozy-Boots, a brilliant idea at a great price. Just make sure she doesn't put them in the microwave straight after her morning porridge or it'll follow her around all day.

The other option with presents is to go for something themed to a hobby of hers. Golfers can never get enough golfing gadgets and top tip books, gardeners are always grateful for anything that may make their life easier. A quick browse of any decent, dedicated gift site will give you more than enough inspiration and will have great ideas for all budgets.

We all know price is key in today's world, so why not save the cash you'd have spent on those expensive shop-bought Mothers Day Cards and use it to buy her something really lovely, or just bring down the cost of yet another festive day that may be prone to denting your wallet. By the time you get to Fathers Day, you'll be an absolute whizz at churning out your own professional-looking designer cards. And don't get us started on the money you can save by designing, printing and packing all of your own Christmas cards…
