How to know what women want | Gifts for Her from GettingPersonal.co.uk
21 August 2009
Knowing what women want, at least as far as men are concerned, is the Holy Grail of romance. Unfortunately, whilst Mel Gibson may have been able to read the minds of women in the Hollywood film 'What Women Want', understanding the fairer sex is considerably less straightforward for real men. Indeed, even simple tasks such as buying gifts for her – irrespective of whether this refers to a wife, girlfriend or relative – is fraught with danger for the average man. It is as if all knowledge of and appreciation for the woman in question evaporates when the time comes for a man to choose
gifts for her
, which will invariably be snapped up at the last moment in an open-all-hours local convenience store. Therefore, windscreen de-icer, Maxim magazine and Haribo are traditional panic buys for the most desperate of men. However, life need not be so difficult. Indeed, knowing what women want when it comes to buying presents for them is not a task that men should trifle themselves with to any great extent. On the contrary, buying gifts for her is relatively simple if a few golden rules are observed carefully. Moreover, these rules are already known to most men, so it is invariably just a simple matter of remembering them. Which of course, is asking too much of the average man!
Notwithstanding this, the rules are as follows: first, a woman will drop massive hints as to the gift of her dreams – she may even literally spell it out to her fella (who should carefully monitor the arrangement of alphabet fridge magnets and take notice of 'junk' mail advertisements that are placed strategically throughout the home); second, when these hints are inevitably ignored by said fella, his female companion will be unable to resist the temptation to launch into a bitter and irate (and conveniently audible) telephone conversation with another woman (usually a girlfriend or sister) that will reveal the gift so ignored; and, third, should the man be too busy playing on his Xbox 360 to avail of this telephone conversation, he can save the day by remembering that gifts for her never fail to disappoint if they comprise wine, chocolate and a completely pointless stuffed teddy bear. Thus, in theory at least, buying gifts for her should be a breeze. However, the powers that be will always conspire to make a man's job harder than it needs to be – alcoholism, chocolate allergies, dieting and irrational fears of stuffed toys routinely put paid to male hopes of a simple life. Therefore, knowing what women want – what they really want – is ultimately a matter of knowing the woman herself.
Generally speaking,
gifts for her
should be chosen in context. For instance, a wedding anniversary present should not be plucked from the 'gifts for her' aisle at the local supermarket. Indeed, such an event is an opportunity for a man to express unbridled love for his wife in the form of a large shiny stone. However, less lavish and expensive gifts for her may suffice for more routine occasions such as a birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day or Valentine's Day.
One such gift that is guaranteed to impress most women is the Mini Facial and Massage Gift Pack, which retails for under £30 and offers women something that they do not often get at work or in the home – the chance to relax and unwind. This present is ideal for a Mother's Day gift but works on many levels for all types of women, young and old. Indeed, the experience of being pampered with facial rejuvenation and a back, neck and shoulder massage is perfect for fending off everyday stresses.
Other female-oriented presents include personalised Champagne bottles, which obviously comprise delightful French sparkling white wine but are also of interest for their personalised branding, and the My Last Rolo gift box, which is perfect for men who want to eat virtually all the chocolates whilst maintaining the illusion of sharing in an utterly romantic context. Ultimately, buying
gifts for her
is not a task that can be entered into without any prior consideration. In any relationship, whether it is between lovers or family members, a certain respect must be paid to the recipient's interests. Indeed, a woman will often judge the standard of her relationship by the quality of those chosen gifts for her – if there is a distinct lack of imagination or interest behind such presents, it is all too easy for parallels to be drawn and this can often spell disaster for couples. Thus, knowing what women want is not about guessing what gifts they desire – it is about knowing who they are.
