Christmas is so expensive! There's the food to buy for the festive dinners and the booze for the glitzy parties and extra bills to pay because family and guests often stay and then there are just so many other things: Christmas cards, wrapping paper, new decorations and the tree... it all adds up! So, to help save you cash this Christmas we're going to look at ways to have a very merry Christmas without over-spending.

Picking Presents
Christmas presents are one of the many expenses at Christmas time which claws cash out of your bank account but it doesn't need to be that way! There are lots of great Christmas presents on sale for under £10 and they can show your loved ones how much you care without breaking the bank.

For example, for mums who love gardening and watching the telly, knee rests and x factor mugs make marvellous Christmas presents. You can buy gardening knee rests for under £5 each to keep her legs and knees supple when she's doing the weeding and they come in bright colours printed with phrases like: 'Head Gardener' and 'Flower Power Mum.'

If she likes watching X Factor then she'd love an X Factor mug, they're also available for under a fiver and what better mug to drink that cup of tea out of while she watches the show?

Planning Perfect Parties
Christmas presents are just one sort of joy that the festive season brings; there are lots of great parties to have fun at too! Whether you're having family over for drinks and nibbles or going to a work-do think about how much it will cost and plan a budget.
One of the biggest problems at Christmas time which effects your wallet as well as your health is over-drinking and by making sure you know how much you're spending on the drinks (whether at home or out on the town) you'll also know how much you're drinking and be entirely in control of it. Some people traditionally open their Christmas presents (which they receive from friends) at friend's Christmas parties so they can see each other's smiling faces when they do.
If you're heading to a Christmas party you could offer to take along something you're famous for making like a cake or a special side dish or take some beer or wine to help make their Christmas a more affordable one too! Christmas is a time for sharing, so having a budget but also being thoughtful and helping others is all part of the Christmas spirit?

Ways to Save
As well as budgeting for and planning the Christmas presents you'll be buying carefully this year you can budget for food and other festive expenses too. It only takes a little while to sit down and make a few lists and by setting limits and targets on how much you spend you can save lots of money.
We've said that buying Christmas presents online is a good idea but you can apply the same principle to other Christmas goodies too. For example, by organising your Christmas shop online instead of going to the supermarket you can beat the rush and avoid buying any impulse bargains you don't really need. After all, it's only a bargain if you need it and often we find ourselves purchasing items we wouldn't normally buy just because they are on special offer.
Some companies that deliver organic vegetables also have special offers to attract customers at Christmas and taking advantage of one of those could get you some fresh vegetables for Christmas dinner on the cheap!
For meat, such as the turkey, supermarkets often do big deals but if you have a large freezer it might be worth having a nose around some of your local traditional butchers, not only should the quality of the meat be better but you might find that on the run up to Christmas they also do some big deals on festive meat selections.
