Babies and toddlers are constantly learning. They are always absorbing new information and having new experiences. This means that toys are of vital importance to babies and toddlers and can help them to learn more about the world around them.

They can also be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience for both the parents and child. Children have vastly different rates of development and learn to walk and talk at different stages in their life. This means that different toys will be appropriate for individual children at different stages in their life. All children, however, are naturally inquisitive and their brains are naturally wired to absorb everything they do and learn from it. They are very curious and you may have noticed that as soon as children can talk there is one word that passes their lips more than others, 'why?' This means that the toys you give your child at this stage in their development are a very important part of their life and future development. Before your children are even close to beginning school, they are learning. This is why it is vitally important to make their home environment as interesting and educational as possible. Toys are a great tool when teaching your children concepts which they will need in the world. Concepts such as fast and slow, big and small can be taught using toys. Giving your tots a balanced and well chosen selection of toys will positively help their development and education from the very beginning of their lives.

Babies and young children are very much in need of brightly coloured toys which are very tactile and stimulating. Toys which include the senses such as hearing, seeing and touching are crucial to a young child's development. Tactile objects such as teddy bears are great. Babies and young toddlers also need toys which they can easily hold and keep a good grip of. Toys which are very good for babies include mobiles which encourage them to touch and mobiles which play music are particularly good. Soft books and other soft toys are also very good for the development of babies and getting them used to books even from a very young age is definitely a good thing. Rattles and squeaky toys are also great for young babies and encourage them to use their sense.

Toddlers, as you probably know, need constant stimulation. Toddlers begin to understand more and more how things work and what they need to do in order to manipulate and work an object. They become much more co-ordinated and are much more in control of their motor skills. Motor skills play a very important role in the development of toddlers and so any toys which encourage this are a good thing. Things like Jigsaw puzzles and large building blocks made excellent toys for toddlers and helps them develop their critical thinking abilities as well as their fine motor skills.

As your child gets older it is a good idea to buy more educational toys and toys which they can play with you. You may also want to start teaching them about things such as where food comes from and the natural world so that they will grow up with a healthy attitude to life, food and the environment. There are a range of Grow It toys where you can grow your own plants such as a four leaf clover and these are a great way of introducing natural processes into your child's life. For younger children you can buy a Mr Grasshead grow your own. This is a fun way of introducing the idea of growing things to your children. Young children love to learn but when they have fun toys to help them, they enjoy it even more and they are more likely to retain more of the information.

When children reach the age of 3, they love to engage in more creative forms of play. They love to dress up and role play. They like to take care of dolls and invent fun lives for their teddy bears. When they get to four or five, they like to play puzzle games and games which have more rules. They like more complex games as they begin to learn more and more. They like to play games such as pool and billiard sets which engage their ever improving motor skills and allow them to have fun and socialise more with friends and family. They also like to play more solitary independent games as they themselves begin to feel more and more independent.
