If you buy a card in a shop the most personal attribute you'll probably find on the front of one is actually someone's age, but being a year older is so much more than a number! Every year we become wiser and more experienced and this is especially exciting when it comes to young children. It can be a real pleasure to watch a child progress; becoming stronger and smarter and gaining a greater understanding of the world. Some of the things children say are incredibly heart warming and they seem to appreciate thoughtful and affectionate messages in their cards as much as adults do. Many parents choose to hold on to birthday cards from their children's early life as a fond reminder of those developmental years and the more meaningful and personal those cards are the better! Meanwhile, the cards sold in high street shops which say a kid's age on the front are nice enough, but with personalised birthday cards you can add any age and name, including cute nicknames, making personalised cards an even more emotional and heartfelt option. Also, when you're looking for the perfect card in a shop, a lot of the cards display milestone birthdays such as an 18th, 21st or 40th birthdays but lots of other ages aren't there! Nicknames And Jokes There are obvious benefits to providing your loved ones with a card which has their name or nickname on the front. It will surprise them because it's unusual and will seem to have taken much more effort to get. Although, it should probably be mentioned that personalised cards are easy to buy online. It'll also give you the chance to make a joke, or use a nickname that will make the recipient laugh or just make them happier! Children who are learning to write their name at school really love receiving cards with their name on the front because they recognise it almost instantly and realise how special and unique personalised cards are! On the other hand, adults love personalised cards too, especially funny ones or cards which remind them of good times they have spent with you. Cards are about conjuring meaning and communicating how much you care, so personalised birthday cards are even better at that. Far too many cards are sent with very generic and boring messages inside which say little more than: 'love you' and a signature. Make your cards stand out more by carefully choosing words that mean something to the person you're giving the card to and consider what might make them laugh or smile instead. Surprises are wonderful and one of the biggest surprises you can get someone on their birthday is a unique card which tells them how you feel. Especially, if they're expecting a boring shop bought one! A Card Worth Keeping Essentially, because cards are supposed to make people happy and provide a touching insight in to how another person feels the best personalised cards will be worth keeping for a lifetime. They will become keep sakes and become stored away like a photograph or a favourite postcard would be. That's why we think that you should take some time to choose a card and add a name or number to the front, as well as thinking carefully about what to write inside. These are the attributes which could determine whether your card becomes a piece of treasure to the recipient or if instead it's thrown away. Some people struggle to think of what to write inside a card, so here are some ideas: • Talk about how you met someone and say why you're happy or lucky to still know the person. • Say which personal characteristics you love most; perhaps you love their sense of humour, smartness, kindness or their good looks. • Tell them what you hope will happen for them, do you hope they'll get a better job, or hope they'll pass their driving test soon, or even get good grades in their exams? • Tell them if you miss them and wish you could see them more often (if you don't get to see them as often as you'd like) or tell them how happy it makes you when you see them regularly and why. • Offer to help them (generally, or with something specific) and tell them you'll always be there for them if they ever need you.
