Do you find yourself spending ages looking for the perfect greeting card to send to friends and family? So much to choose from, so many different styles and yet nothing that seems quite what you are looking for, especially when it comes to cards for those closest to you such as Mothers Day Cards?

To solve this problem it is possible these days to begin creating all your own greetings cards. Craft shops and web sites can supply coloured, embossed or foiled cards to which you can then add decoupage or other embellishments to create really professional looking Mothers Day cards for a relatively small initial outlay. Those of you with IT skills may already have experimented with your own computer designed cards. With Mothers Day only a couple of months away, now is the time to start thinking about your design for this particularly special occasion. Time and effort spent on a custom made card will go a long way towards showing your mother just how much you appreciate all the things she does for you!

It's best to have a theme in mind, perhaps your mother has a favourite past time such as embroidery, gardening or cooking. Does she have a favourite place for holidays or a love of a particular food? Inspiration could come from any of her interests and could suggest a theme for original gifts too - a voucher for skydiving, language lessons, possibly tickets for the Chelsea Flower Show. If cost is an issue, perhaps for younger readers, don't necessarily dismiss certain obvious but unoriginal ideas out of hand. Chocolates are obviously not original, but never underestimate a chocoholic's appetite for them. Flowers too are not an original choice of gift but are nevertheless always appreciated. Any types of unoriginal yet acceptable gifts such as these can be made more exciting if presented in a novel way, such as chocolate pizza (yes this really is available for sale on line, what an age we live in!) or the latest "Flowercards", which combine a floral arrangement with a greeting card. These types of gifts which can be ordered on line, have the added advantage of the option of a personalised message, more evidence for your mum of the planning and thought that has gone into your humble yet well chosen gift.

Once you have a theme in mind, a colour scheme might suggest itself (red and white for a Manchester United fan, for example). Your design is more likely to be successful if you stick to a limited number of colours. Certain themes, such as Spanish Flamenco, will suggest lively, contrasting colours whereas other themes might suggest more muted and harmonious shades and tints (Origami?).

Now comes the really creative part. You've bought and received countless greetings cards yourself in the past. There are basically three types, namely humorous, cute and arty. Many subdivisions exist, of course, but you will know what is going to appeal to your mum. Your own artistic abilities will also have to be considered when determining the scope of your design. As mentioned earlier, craft items are available to help those who can't draw for toffee as stickers, rubber stamps, lettering, ribbons, glitter, are all available to help you create your masterpiece. IT buffs will have similar help from Microsoft.

Something as simple as your mother's name on the front of Mothers Day Cards can be surprisingly effective. A frame placed round a suitable picture illustrating your chosen theme; either one of your own photos or even one cut from a magazine or brochure, could be another suitable subject for the front of your card. Clip art may not be such a good idea, unless used humorously. Carrying the colours and theme through to the inside of the card adds to the overall effect of a professional job, but don't go overboard. Too much can create a "busy" feel and will distract from your handwritten, heartfelt, personal message inside.

Your message is possibly the most important part of the card you are creating. Perhaps you already know what you want to say, or have already found the ideal quotation from a poem, play or book that perfectly describes your mother's attributes or the debt of gratitude you know you owe her? Perhaps you are hoping the effort you have obviously put into your creation will say it all for you?

Speaking as a mother myself, we are inclined to get sentimental about absolutely anything handmade by our offspring and "love you mum" on our Mothers Day Cards is all we really need to see to keep us going for another year.
