Whenever I visit family fun days, charity fund raising events, craft fairs and the like, I always notice a queue of children, patiently waiting in line, chatting away excitedly. I can bet my bottom dollar that those kids, whose ages range from babes in arms right up to teenagers, boys and girls alike, are waiting to have their faces painted. They are only too happy to hand over £2 or more to be turned into fairies, tigers, witches or aliens. The hard part is getting them to have their faces washed at the end of the day. All children love to pretend that they are wild animals, evil characters from books and films, or kind and good fairies who can grant anyone and everyone their wish come true. So it is no wonder that face paints are such a big hit with all the kids, and their imaginations will always take their instant facial transformation to another level. You will probably find that your little angel will remain in character for the rest of the day, so you had better watch out if he or she has been turned into a lion, as the roaring and scratching could go on for hours. Face paint parties are great for kids too. My child's birthday party was a huge success, and I managed to have 12 excitable and hyperactive kids, all high on sweets and crisps, standing still and silent while they watched me create mini works of art to their friends' faces. I could not believe how focused they were on the job in hand, and the temporary lull in the lively party activities was thoroughly appreciated by me, brief though it was. So, there are hidden bonuses to having a face paint activity at a children's party, apart from having a room full of happy kids.

The different styles and images that you can create with face paint ideas are endless. All you need is a little practice and a few ideas. What you need to start you up and running is a face paint book. The Five Minute Faces book is full of great ideas for you to have a go at. Although the book has 30 different designs, you will probably find that you are better at some of the ideas than others, and this is how you can develop your repertoire. Once you have mastered the art of face paint, you can let the kids choose which type of face they want to have. Now you need to choose your colours. Face paints can be purchased individually or in kits. You can choose from some amazing colours to suit your requirements. You may wish to change the colour scheme that is used in the face paint ideas book, or stick to the original colours. There is nothing wrong with having a blue and purple tiger or a red and orange zebra, and you will probably find that this is the kind of weird and wonderful stuff that kids will request. The bigger the variety of face paint colours you have, the greater your scope is going to be, so if you plan to do lots of different styles, get as many different pots of face paint as you can. Then you can practice blending colours together, smoothing edges so that you do not see the joins, and create a truly realistic face that anyone would be proud of. Be prepared for the children to want to have a go at painting each others faces, or even their own. It is a good idea to have extra sponges to apply the different colours. This way, you will not have to be constantly rinsing out a sponge or 2 before applying another colour to a face, or another design to the next face in the queue.
