As much as we all like to think of ourselves as altruistic to at least some extent, there's no denying that choosing and buying birthday or Christmas presents for other people just isn't that fun. Many a touching, warm and fuzzy film would have us believe that the true joy of gifts is in the giving, but if we're honest, how true actually is that? Buying gifts can be a trying experience and we've all spent hours dragging ourselves around the shops, desperately trying to find something be vaguely adequate. There is of course a list a mile long of 'stock' presents that rear their head every birthday! We all know the kind of thing... a book that someone recommended to us once and looks alright from the cover; a CD or DVD that has just been released and is apparently very good (or so everyone else seems to think, which is why the recipient will most probably have three of them, bad times!); a pair of novelty socks (no comment); a pre-packaged set of toiletries from either The Body Shop or Marks and Spencer, depending on the recipient's age; or – trustiest of all trusty fall-back birthday presents – a gift voucher that they will probably use to buy something useful like more pens for school or a pack of envelopes and some stamps.
So here's the problem: all of these presents are undeniably useful or adequate in their own right. I mean really, there's obviously a reason they're the traditional, trusty presents that we are all guilty of giving every now and then. But as useful and decent as they might be, they're just not very original are they? Honestly, do you think anyone has ever been surprised when opening a suspiciously lavender scented parcel to find a number of neatly packaged bottles of shower cream/body moisturiser/hand cream inside? Or when ripping the wrapping paper from a rather floppy-looking present to find a 'nice' shirt and tie combo that'll 'come in really handy for work'? That'll be a big fat no then.

So what do you go for when you're really hoping to buy an original gift that will not only incite looks of pleasant surprise from the recipient and mutterings of envy from their friends and relatives, but also that they'll really love and cherish for years to come?
