Peace on earth. It's a wonderful idea, and most people would relish the idea of everyone getting along, especially if it resulted in there being no wars anywhere. But is it really possible? It seems as though every decade brings its own troubles; the last century was particularly punctuated by discord, from the first and second world wars, to the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. And with Iraq and Afghanistan, the first decade of the 21st century has arguably been little better. It seems strange that, despite countless opportunities to learn from past mistakes, we seem to have not learned all that much at all.

However, despite this sea of conflict and negativity that periodically seems to engulf the world, there are also countless examples of non-violence and compassion. It would seem that, as much as we have a desire to harm either ourselves, or others, we are equally capable of tremendous acts of self-sacrifice and a willingness to look after those more vulnerable than ourselves.

Children are perhaps one of the strongest symbols of world peace, and it's certainly true that they can bring a lot of joy, even though they may also get under our feet and cause our nerves to fray.
