As I'm sure we're all aware, buying presents for people is never easy at the best of times. For starters, other people's birthdays – whether it's your Mum, your best friend, or your great uncle Fred – have a nasty habit of creeping up on you. You know the kind of situation... you innocently flip over the page of your calendar and get a nasty little shock when you're hit in the face with a huge red circle around the date of your brother-in-law's birthday, which you obviously put there in some rare moment of organisation. So once you've actually realised it's your friend or family member's birthday in a mere matter of days, moved past promising yourself you'll be more organised in future (seriously, who are you kidding?) and had a slight flap about the fact that had you not have remembered to turn over the calendar you'd have forgotten this birthday altogether, then the realisation hits that birthdays = presents, which means you're rapidly going to have to find one.

But even when you haven't given yourself only two days to hunt down, buy and wrap the perfect present, it's still not a particularly easy task. It seems to be a cruel and unwritten rule of life that no matter how well you know someone, choosing one singular item that your brother/boyfriend/Nan will like is the world's most difficult challenge. We've all been there... when you're in the middle of a huge and busy shopping centre and after 4 and a half hours still haven't found even one at least vaguely suitable potential present, climbing Mount Snowdon in a pair of 5 inch stilettos seems like an easier option. Everyone's had times when they've very seriously considered jacking in the whole gift hunt and given some extensive thought to how Aunty Doreen would react if you just gave her twenty quid in card. At least she'd be able to buy something she definitely likes, right?

Then, of course, there are the men. Along with that annoying little rule that says presents will always be ridiculously hard to pick, it would also appear to be a basic rule of life that men are infinitely harder to buy presents for. Little gifts like personalised cufflinks work really well and can be treasured forever! It must be the fact that there just aren't as many go-to, standard presents for men. For the ladies, when times get really hard and you're completely void of birthday present inspiration, you can always fall back on the traditional gifts such as a beautiful bunch of flowers, a bottle of perfume, an expensive box of chocolates, an attractive but generally inoffensive item of clothing, or a piece of jewellery. Whilst such gifts may lack imagination and might not be completely to the recipient's tastes, as a general rules they're accepted gratefully and with pleasure.

With the men, however, it's a different story altogether. There just isn't that list we can easily fall back on. The best there is in the way of traditional presents for men is, well, novelty socks. And really, on what planet did a garish and extremely unfunny pair of socks become the height of present giving? It really is a sad state of affairs when we can't think of anything better to shove in a gift bag than a random bottle of wine we grabbed from our own wine rack (probably a bottle we were given for a birthday a few years ago) and a pair of 'hilarious' socks that are probably emblazoned with a character from the Simpsons.

There is, however, help out there. When you're looking for a great present for a guy, something a little unusual and that they'll use for years to come, you can rarely do better than a pair of personalised cufflinks. Personalised cufflinks are great for a number of reasons.
