As I'm sure we're all more than well aware, buying presents for friends and loved ones just isn't an easy task. No matter how well we know the person in question, for some strange reason that doesn't seem to make picking a present that you know they'll love any easier. You may have been a shoulder to cry on when your best friend's heart was broken, held her hair back when she was sick after a few too many spritzers and helped her hide that embarrassing drunken holiday mistake of a tattoo from her somewhat conservative parents, but for some unknown (and rather irritating) reason, knowing someone inside out just doesn't seem to make it any easier to find a birthday present that you're sure they'll really love. There's nothing worse than cringingly handing over a gift and saying a small prayer to the gift-giving Gods, hoping desperately that your friend/sibling/parent won't hate whatever you finally bought as much as you fear they might and then seeing them pull out their best acting skills as they feign surprise (okay that part might be true!) and delight.

It's a tricky business indeed and many will be familiar with the truly frustrating and exhausting scenario of trudging backwards and forwards between a variety of shops, comparing a large selection of potential presents, weighing them all up against each other and then (dare I say inevitably) coming to the conclusion that none of them are really quite right after all and finally give up and go home for a cuppa. So what do most of us do when we're lost in a scary sea of possible gifts and no clue which is the one that will take you straight to the top of the Christmas card list? Well, let's put it this way... when your friend or loved one's birthday is looming on the horizon and you're stuck for what to get, most people tend to go down one of two routes. Route number one is only for the daring/deranged - something kind of wacky and 'out there' that they'll either love with all their heart or will force them to reconsider any further association with you. You know the kind of thing we're talking about here... a t-shirt with an oh-so-hilarious saying on it, a psychedelic hand-knitted scarf, or anything that involves the word 'novelty'. If deciding this route isn't for you, the other option is of course the 'useful' route. This is certainly the safer of the two options, as buying something that (you at least think) is useful means that the lucky recipient will at least get some, well, use out of it. Items that typically fall into this category included (the dreaded though traditional) socks, any kind of toiletries (particularly those in gift sets) and stationery/office supplies. Yet handy though these well-intentioned gifts may be, there's no escaping the fact that they're just a little, well, boring. It's true, for example, that everyone wears socks and they are indeed excellent for keeping your toes warm when the weather gets chilly, but it's hardly an inspired gift now is it?

So what are your options when trying to track down a special gift that they'll not only love, but will stand out from the crowd of other presents?

Well, in recent years personalised gifts have become more and more popular and with that the possibilities for personalisation have simply grown and grown. Personalised gifts are a great way of giving a gift that is both unusual and unique to the recipient. Personalised gifts come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from the more traditional to the weird and utterly wonderful.

Likewise, personalised gifts such as diaries and calendars make a lovely and unique present that will be looked at and loved every day for a whole year!

More unusual personalised gifts are also out there and should not be looked over! For travel-lovers, personalised gifts such as a 'places we have been' world map make a memorable present that will be loved for years. Personalised gifts that might be perfect for sports lovers include a personalised golf putter or football. For food-lovers personalised gifts such as personalised jelly moulds and retro sweet jars are great!
