Choosing and buying presents isn't easy at the best of times. It always seems to be that no matter how well you really know someone, that doesn't really make choosing the perfect present that they'll love for years to come (or at the very least a couple of weeks) any easier. So maybe you do remember your best friend's string of dodgy hair cuts and even dodgier string of boyfriends. Maybe you were there for your nephew's first day of school and did attend his graduation. And maybe you are the model grandchild and spend every Sunday helping your Grandma make a roast. But for some unknown (and hugely irritating) reason, that doesn't seem to make you equipped to happily head to the shops, confident that you'll almost instantly find a gift that'll go down an absolute treat and firmly cement your position as best friend or favourite relative.

We all know that there's some occasions when you're just not as bothered about the quality of your presents as others. Though it may sound bad, when you're trying to find something for the random woman you got lumbered with in the office Secret Santa, chances are you aren't going to go too far out of your way to make this an earth-shatteringly fabulous present that she'll still be gushing about in three Christmases time. Maybe it sounds harsh, but come on! We all know it's true. Same goes when you're ridiculously busy and all of a sudden you realise it's aunty Enid's birthday next Tuesday. When the cat needs to go to the vet, the bathroom keeps flooding, little Jimmy needs help with a science project, you promised to bake 3 dozen cupcakes for the school fete and you're up against deadline at works, finding the perfect birthday present for cousin Tom's 23rd birthday just isn't very high up on the priority list.

That being said, there are of course occasions when you're not up to your eyeballs in chores and you really do want to buy something spectacular. Buying presents that will be loved when the wrapping paper is ripped off but that will also stand the test of time is an especially tricky task.

So when it's a special occasion or birthday and you're looking for a gift that the lucky recipient will treasure for many years to come, personalised gifts really are a brilliant option. Gone are the days when a personalised gift meant a snazzy hand-knitted jumper from your Nan with your name in sparkly pink wool across the middle (come on, we've all been forced by our Mums to wear something along these lines on Christmas morning!).
