There are tons of choices involved in throwing a great
party
. You'll be thinking about where your party should take place, how many people you should invite to it, what food to put on, if any, and how to get people drinking and dancing!
As such, arranging a party can be a stressful experience for lots of people but it doesn't need to be. If you relax and plan your party well in advance you can have just as much fun as your guests do and you will look back on the night fondly (instead of with relief that's its over!).
Party Themes
Whatever type of party you throw, whether it's for kids or grown-ups a party theme can really help tie everything together and make a celebration more fun. Classy grown up dinner parties work well if you add a seasonal theme, so for example you can make Winter parties festive by serving mulled wine and Summer parties beach-themed by serving tropical cocktails and fresh fruit as an aperitif, then in Autumn, you can make a nice table display with pomegranates, pumpkins or pinecones and serve hearty warming harvest-season food such as ginger and parsnip soup.
For brilliant birthday parties why not theme them with a type of fancy dress such as pirates or cowboys? You could even draw inspiration from a favourite film! School uniform parties can be really popular too, as can famous movie star themes. Or, for a more basic party idea, why not have a student style beer and pizza party?
Party Food
Once you've got a party theme you can start thinking about buying food which fits it. To get people hungry try offering aperitifs and keeping the food under wraps and then unveil it once you hear a few rumbling tummies. That way you'll have more people digging in than if you leave a buffet on display all night, because it often gets taken for granted and ignored a little if you do leave food out.
As we've already said ordering a stack of pizzas is ideal for a relaxed
party
and some seasonal cooking is great for a dinner party but what about something in between? The 'cauldron method' is great for all kinds of parties. Get two of the biggest pans you can find then fill one with rice or pasta and the other with vegetable chilli, an Indian or Thai curry, or even a vegetable crammed pasta sauce, then cook some meat separately.
You could roast chicken legs or breasts in the oven for example. Using these method vegetarian guests can have the vegetable dish with a side of rice or pasta and meat eaters can have the additional meat portion.
By stacking up paper bowls on the worktop next to the lidded pans, when tummies begin to rumble you can ladle out portions of this magic food from your 'cauldrons' and give it to party people as and when they're hungry! The pans can be kept hot (on a low heat) so that everyone can eat at a time which suits them. By stocking up on large tubs of ice cream and sweet toppings you can even serve dessert the same way.
Being Prepared
If you're hosting a big party it's essential that you know how many people are coming so that you can stock up on the right amount of food and drink. If you allow guests to bring friends be prepared for them to bring at least 3 people each and buy plenty of booze which you can store if you over purchase.
It might seem silly buying more beer or wine than you'll potentially need, but think of it as an investment in a future party and go for supermarket deals or look on wine club websites for special offers!
The Clean Up
We've already mentioned disposable paper plates and bowls and that's because they can make cleaning up after a
party
, much easier. If you have a dish washer you could invest in some good plastic (melamine) plates and bowls and it would save you money in the long term.
However, if you don't have a dish washer, disposable items allow you to throw everything away the morning after with minimal fuss. All you need to do is go around your home collecting rubbish in a bin bag and place empty glass bottles in to a recycling box. Give the floor a vacuum, wipe down the counters and your house is fresh as a daisy!
