Prepare in advance, buying presents on-line (Presents)

25 July 2011

No matter how altruistic you genuinely are, it's fair to say that buying presents for other people isn't really anyone's favourite job. That's not because deep down we're all inherently selfish and resent spending our time and money on something for someone else, in fact usually the opposite is true. It's because we care so much about or friends and family that we want to buy them brilliant and unusual presents that will surprise them and that they'll love, but achieving this goal is far from easy.

There are a number of reasons why buying brilliant presents is high on everyone's lists of 'least favourite things to do', one of them being that we always seem to leave buying presents to the last minute, making the whole experience panicked and rushed. Once again, this usually isn't because we don't care, but because compared to all the other things going on in our hectic lives, buying presents for uncle Derek's 60th birthday just doesn't figure too highly on the list of priorities. We all know what it's like – there's a hundred and one things going on at work or university or home and we're drowning in a list of 'urgent' things to do so long you can't even see the end of it. Then suddenly, out of the blue, Mum phones and asks you what you've got for your friend or relatives birthday, at which point you get that all too familiar sinking feeling when you remember that it's actually in less than a week's time and you haven't given presents a second (or even first!) thought. Ultimately then, you land up in a position where you're running round the shops frantically rifling through all sorts of potential presents, though eventually lumping for a 'safe though boring' option – novelty socks, bubble bath gift sets, boxes of chocolates and other such items.

Another reason that none of us enjoy buying birthday presents for our friends and families is that buying presents is just plain difficult. No matter how well you know someone or how many memories and secrets you've shared, it seems to be that when it comes to buying presents, no amount of intimate and extensive insider knowledge is going to help when inspiration is lacking and the clock is ticking. It defies logic, certainly, but it's true. We've all struggled to find the perfect presents for our parents, siblings or best friends even though these are the people we know best in the world and then we feel guilty because we can't think of something wonderful and original. Oh dear.

All is not entirely lost, however, as there are a number of ways in which we can take at least some of the stress out of buying birthday presents for friends and loved ones. First and foremost, if you really want to help yourself out then the best thing to do is to get organised! Write down all those important birthdays in your diary so that you're never caught out at the last minute and forced to resort to a giving a boring old box of chocolate. If you want to get really organised, you might even think about writing a note in your diary a week before people's birthdays and that way you're giving yourself at least a week to get to the shops!

Perhaps the best way to go about hassle-free shopping for presents, however, is to go searching for them on-line. When you head down to your local shopping centre, there is only a finite number of shops you can look around and therefore only a limited number of potential presents to choose from. However, on-line the possibilities are limitless. With a few clicks of your mouse you have a whole world of could-be perfect presents at your finger tips, many of which you wouldn't be able to find in ordinary shops.

If you want to get something really special then personalised gifts can be a wonderful idea, but getting hold of these on the high street can be tough. You'll often have to hunt high and low to find shops that can offer personalised presents and if you do this will generally include a waiting period to have the present sent away and personalised. If you opt to buy a personalised gift on-line, however, there's so much more on offer than you could find at your local shops. Where would you be able to find a personalised football book or personalised calendar during a trip to town, for example? So, if you're after some really special presents, get yourself organised and forget dashing to the shops. Instead, sit down with a nice cup of tea and get clicking away!
