Presents That Mary Poppins Would Be Proud Of | Christmas Presents

17 August 2009

It's that time of year again when Christmas is only around the corner and you can almost smell the excitement. Shop windows are dressed with glitter and fake snow. Shoppers stagger under the weight of huge boxes and heavy bulging bags. Christmas Carols blast out of cheap and tinny sound systems and you may even spot the odd – sometimes very odd – elf guarding the Christmas presents in Santa's grotto in the larger department stores. Frankly, the whole business of visiting Santa used to scare me stupid. I would be eager to join the queue inside the elaborately ornate grotto with 40 other excitable kids, but by the time I was close to the great man himself, I would turn and walk away, foregoing the Christmas gifts from the lucky dip box. We workers look forward to a few days when we will be able to have a well deserved lie-in in the mornings and a short break from the bustle of rush hour traffic and all those bad tempers. The children look forward to their Christmas presents. But we all look forward to watching those fabulous old movies that they drag out, dust down and broadcast at this time of year – wonderful films that do not get to see the light of day at any other time. Right up there at the top of the list for all members of the family is Mary Poppins, with her happy countenance, helpful spirit and memorable songs. This lovely movie radiates warmth and joy, and is just what you need on one of those cold and damp winter nights. So, if you are planning a family get together around the TV this Christmas, make sure that you are well prepared. If you do not want to spend half your time getting up and down, in and out of the kitchen to fetch and carry at the family's demand, ensure that you have the yummy nibbles and drinks close at hand, and that way you will not lose the plot.

By the time you and your family have enjoyed a pleasant day opening the Christmas presents, eating the laboriously thought out and carefully prepared Christmas dinner, arguing about who is going to dry the dishes, and trying to rouse Gran from her gin induced snooze, you will all be ready to collapse into a comfy chair for a few hours of watching the box. You all know that food is going to be required at some point during the process, but you can put your last pound on the fact that nobody will do anything about it ... except you, that is. Why not buy them all some little extra Christmas presents that are edible, gluggable and shareable? Everyone will enjoy the First Aid Chocolate Box, with Belgian chocolates galore to share around the room. This delicious Christmas gift has a great selection of little nibbles; such as chocolate buttons in milk and dark chocolate, strawberry buttons, coffee buttons, white chocolate orange and dark chocolate straws. So, no matter what kind of chocolate people prefer, there is definitely something there for everyone. If you have some unexpected guests turning up in the process, hand this yummy Christmas gift around. If you have any aunts and uncles or even grandparents with you at Christmas, they are going to love being taken back in time with some Old Favourites Sweet Hamper memories. This delicious Christmas gift is a gift packed full of edible nostalgia, with old favourites such as pear drops, mint humbugs, rosy apples, jelly babies and jelly beans. This Christmas gift will have Grandma reminiscing about her school days in no time, but a great way to hush her up is to offer her a toffee bonbon. A lovely and very useful Christmas gift idea for displaying all of these fine nibbles is the Fiesta Sweetie Dish, an aluminium dish with engravings of some of the finest sweets ever made.

For those who do not have a sweet tooth, or just as an alternative to all that sugar, two lovely Christmas presents for any adult with sophisticated taste are the Cider and Cheddar Gift Set and the fabulous cocktail making kit, 101 Classic Cocktails. With the Cider and Cheddar Gift set you can enjoy delicious mature cheddar layered on a herb biscuit with a spoonful of apple chutney, accompanied by a glass of refreshing Sheppy's Dabinett Apple Cider. Cheese and apple is a classic combination. The cheese will look great sitting on the lovely cheese slate, and will taste wonderful too. Or, if you are into mixing your own cocktails, collect your orders from the various lounging guests adorning your living room chairs and show them what you can do with the help of a secret ingredient. This Christmas gift will be helpful to you again and again, at parties, birthdays, barbecues and general get togethers. 101 Classic Cocktails is a fabulous cocktail making kit which is a lovely Christmas present for anyone who enjoys drinking something with that touch of added interest. It includes instructions on how to make 101 cocktails, as well as the all important cocktail shaker. So get crushing some ice, and shake it baby, shake it.
Mary Poppins won't mind if you have to pop out to the kitchen to refill everyone's glass once in a while.
