One of the best things about Christmas is undoubtedly opening your stocking on Christmas morning and surveying your many stocking fillers, if you are lucky enough to have received any. If you've avoided the lump of shiny black coal and have a stocking stuffed with stocking fillers, you are very lucky indeed and it is always a very exciting time as you rummage through your stocking looking at what gifts you have received from your friends and family. Stocking fillers are, however, usually not the main presents you will receive at Christmas.

You usually receive main presents which are wrapped and placed under the tree ready for you to open on Christmas morning. Quite often, we are so wrapped up in buying the main presents and organising the Christmas dinner that we tend to neglect the stocking fillers. This is a shame as it really is very exciting when opening your stocking and the stocking fillers are usually the first presents you peek at on Christmas morning. This year, you should pull up your socks and make a real effort with your stocking fillers. They need not be anything expensive, after all you may have a lot of them to buy, but, you should spend some real thought and effort on choosing just the right things for the right people.

The tradition of stocking fillers is a long one in the Western world and it is one that is much treasured. It is especially exciting for little children who love to wake up in the morning and see their bulging stockings filled by Santa himself. It can really make their Christmas if their stocking fillers are good. Once again, they do not have to be expensive but just something the person receiving them will really appreciate, enjoy and cherish. The whole point of stocking fillers is to be kind, thoughtful and friendly and to give just a little of your good fortune to someone else. The stocking filler was first used in the 3rd century in a tribute to St Nicholas who gave all he had to people who were much needier than he was and the tradition just carried on from there. Traditionally sweets, fruit, coins and small toys were given as a token in stockings. These days more and more variety of things are given in stockings from cheap fun items to more expensive gadgets, there is something for everyone's stockings whether big or small or inexpensive to expensive. The perfect stocking filler is easily attainable.

A good place to start when buying stocking fillers is to consider the personality of the person you are buying for. This will make it much easier to find the perfect gift for them. You should plan well by writing a list of all the people you need to buy for and then after their name list their hobbies and interests. Start a few months before Christmas and look out for the things on the list which you might be able to buy. If you buy a few things every week you will have a lot of time to get everything you want.
