Put their name up in lights | Name a Star with GettingPersonal.co.uk

The night skies and the stars have always been held in great fascination for us mere mortals who walk upon the earth. The Egyptians built pyramids parallel to the constellations and Russell Grant built a career waffling on about having the North Star rising up in your Venus.

And many have written lyrics, sonnets and prose about the "stars that blaze like rebel diamonds in the sky" (such is the lyrical genius of Mr Brandon Flowers, that many people worship him, as people used to once worship the stars in the night sky...) and, everyone knows at least the first verse to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Twinkle Twinkle little Star, how I wonder what you are, up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky...etc.). Curiously, very few people know the second, third, fourth, or fifth verse of Twinkle, Twinkle. In fact, few people even know there are five verses; much less that melody was composed by Mozart! However, some lucky parents of four year olds may be acquainted with alternative versions such as "Twinkle Twinkle chocolate bar, my dad drives a rusty car, start the motor, pull the choke, off it goes in a cloud of smoke...”

We refer to our celebrities as 'stars and everyone knows you have made it in showbiz once someone puts their name up in lights. Yes, indeed, our fascination with the stars is unlikely to end any time soon. We worship them, we wish upon them and many are even guided by them. However, how many of us can name a star?

Well, there is the North Star, the Sun of course and isn't there one called Betelgeuse (or was it a great eighties film?). More than likely you will have more success getting people to name constellations, rather than name a star (at the very least people will offer up the Plough, or The Big Dipper, which actually happen to be the same constellation...). The point is that there are in the region of four thousand stars visible to us on the night sky horizon and many have very dull names, such as BD +5deg 1668 or 17 Tauri. Sometimes astronomers are given the chance to name stars that they discover and often stars are given a number, preceded by a letter, which is surely not befitting for something of such beauty and mystery!
