Romantic gifts should be a part of any relationship, whether it's an expensive token given occasionally or the small meaningful gift that may be given at any time. When thinking about romantic gifts there are so many gifts that can be given that allow your sentiments to be expressed in the best possible way.

A single red rose remains the traditional and perhaps the most popular way to say "I love you" and it was the ancient Egyptians who first used flowers to reflect love. In the 1700s, the English and French brought back to their respective countries the "language of flowers" and during the Victorian era many more people became interested in this language of flowers, with many books published on the subject, detailing what flowers represented and also the poetry of flowers. As romantic gifts, roses don't always have to be red. Lavender roses reflect being enchanted with someone, or light pink amongst other things reflects joy and a bunch of yellow roses shows that the giver cares about the recipient. Red chrysanthemums also say "I love you" and tulips all have romantic meanings attached to them. Also remember that any flower can be romantic if there are special meanings attached to it, for example buying the same flowers that were the first flowers you bought the special person in your life will always evoke romance and for that extra thought arrange to have the flowers delivered to her workplace. It is nice for women to buy men flowers as romantic gifts as well; some men will appreciate flowers being bought by a loved one.

Another one of the more traditional romantic gifts is a teddy bear. The inspiration behind teddy bears was the refusal of President Theodore Roosevelt to shoot a bear cub in 1902. This inspired a couple to make and place a stuffed bear in the window of their store, which they named "Teddy's Bear". Because the bear became so popular the couple started up the first teddy bear company in the United States. At the same time, a Steiff bear was made in Germany, based on a drawing from the local zoo. Teddy bears became more and more popular and even as an adult, a teddy bear is still symbolic, representing romance and love. Rather than giving a traditional teddy bear, an alternative gift could be to give a bear adoption pack which help fund research and welfare for these rapidly declining animals.

Pampering goodies are always nice romantic gifts. Women like lots of nice bath products and skin creams and you can always add a "promise" with the goodies that you will come and scrub her back! It may be nice to add a bottle of the favourite perfume, smelling a particular scent on the one you care about is always guaranteed to evoke deep feelings. Men like to be pampered too, how about a favourite set of shower goodies or even some of the new range of male toiletries that are now available and your "promise" can be for a long back massage.

Jewellery as romantic gifts creates so much choice for the giver. Even though the decision about what item buy is completely up to you, remember to think about what styles your partner already wears and try and keep within those boundaries, for example someone who likes long earrings may not be overly impressed with small studs. It's also nice to think about what symbolism different pieces of jewellery may hold, depending on its stones. For example the semi-precious stone Topaz means true love, Malachite represents fidelity and an amethyst represents loyalty, happiness and love. The most precious stone of them all, diamonds are still known as "A girls best friend" they reflect union and eternal love. Emeralds and Rubies also represent love and the Garnet represents loyalty. Pearls are a symbol of femininity and beauty and old legend says that pearls were created when there was a union between the water and the sea and the light with the moon. Turquoise was believed to bring luck and protection to its wearer. Antique, or reproduction jewellery can also be very personal, especially that dating back to the Victorian era. Victorians were very good at using items such as jewellery to express their thoughts for another, because society prevented them from open courtships.

Whatever romantic gifts you choose to express your sentiments as long as it means something to both you and your loved one then the gift will be appreciated and treasured.
