Stocking fillers are one of the most exciting things on a cold Christmas morning. Both adults and children alike can't wait to take a peek into their stockings and see whether they have a shiny black piece of coal or some more interesting stocking fillers lurking in there. Stocking fillers are as big a part of Christmas day as turkey and the Queen's speech but for most of us, they are also much more exciting. The tradition of stuffing stockings with stocking fillers is a long one. It dates all the way back to the third century when St Nicholas gave away all his inheritance he had gained from the passing of his parents to the poor sick and needy in his village. The tradition has been upheld in the western world ever since and is a symbol of sacrifice. It is a warning that we should be kind to and take care of those people who are much less fortunate than we are.

Buying stocking fillers is never an easy task and even the best shoppers can come unstuck when it comes to stuffing stockings. There are limitations to what can be bought for stocking fillers because there is only a limited space inside a stocking. This makes it much more challenging than if you were to just buy a normal present and wrap it to go under the tree. You must be much more thoughtful and creative when picking out the perfect stocking fillers for your friends and family. Of course, this does have the advantage of forcing you to think a lot more about the kind of thing the person you are buying for would appreciate. One of the good things about stocking fillers is that they are not assumed to be expensive. You can buy stocking fillers as cheaply or as expensively as you wish.

Stocking fillers can be fun and light hearted or they can be cherished and personal. The best thing about stocking fillers is that you never know what you are going to receive until you wake up on Christmas morning and take a peek.
