Finding just the right gift for the right occasion can be extremely difficult, regardless of how well you know the person you are shopping for. The more formal occasions such as weddings and christenings are a little easier as there are certain items that have become traditional gifts at such events and often there is even a prepared list from which to choose your gift. But what about when someone has done something special for you and you would like to give them a token of your appreciation? Or if someone is starting a new job and you want to celebrate their success with a small gift that will show how proud you are. It is difficult to know where to start looking for inspiration for such occasions as there is no formula to follow.

Of course you could always ask the person if there is something they would like but for most less formal or unofficial occasions they will almost certainly tell you not to bother getting them anything and you are back at square one. So when you are looking for a thoughtful gift that is also a bit of fun and shows the recipient that you are thinking of them, think about choosing something a little bit impractical that they would never have bought for themselves. A good candidate is an edible treat of some sort as this way they get something tasty to enjoy by themselves or share with friends and you get a fun and unique gift that can be personalised however you wish.

To ensure your gift is personal, though, you will probably want to stay away from the clichéd traditional box of chocolates to say thank you and focus on something a bit more unusual. A fantastic idea that will do just that is a jar of retro sweets. Just like the big jars that used to temptingly line the shelves behind the counter in the sweet shops of your youth, a jar of retro sweets is packed full of all the best treats from days gone by and is sure to delight the recipient by sparking off many long-forgotten memories of childhood. What better way to thank someone for doing something sweet for you than to give them something sweet to enjoy themselves?

Retro sweets include those fantastically fizzy Flying Saucers that would melt on your tongue; pastel coloured candy necklaces that you can wear around your neck and enjoy slowly bead by bead; or even little packets of Love Heart sweets with their adorable messages embossed in candy colours for your sweetheart. Everyone will enjoy reminiscing about the good old days when trying to decide what sweets to buy with your pocket money was the toughest decision of the day and sharing a packet of sugary treats with a close friend was the best way to spend the walk home from school. Retro sweets will bring all those wonderful memories flooding back.

One of the best things about giving retro sweets as a gift is that, not only are they tasty and unusual but they are also about so much more than the sweets themselves. Getting together with friends to share treats and memories is a great way to spend time with your closest friends and just forget about the stresses and strains of modern life and focus on the sheer delight of childhood. Even if you only met as adults, you will be amazed at how many common experiences you and your friends or colleagues share and learning about each others' childhood over a bowl of retro sweets is a fantastic way to get to know each other a little bit better and develop bonds.

Even those memories you thought had been long forgotten will come flooding back as you unwrap the familiar papers on your retro sweets: cycling to the sweet shop after school or sneaking in to spend the last of your pocket money on one more penny chew on the way home. So when you give a gift that reminds them of days gone by, whether it is retro sweets to eat or a disk of music from their teenage years, you are giving much more than just the item itself but also allowing them to recapture the memories that go with it. By taking that little bit of time to think about what the person means to you and why you want to give them a gift in the first place, you will find that whatever you choose is so much more meaningful for both of you. So when the right gift for a particular occasion is a little less obvious than most, or even if you are just looking for something a bit different, consider choosing a present that will appeal to the child in them and bring all sorts of sweet memories flooding back.
