Going in to a gift shop and looking for the perfect gift for someone is like searching for a needle in a haystack! So, don't bother. Instead, try to think of something they'd really like. These days personalised gifts are a lot more sophisticated than they used to be.

For example, engraved champagne glasses are the perfect personalised gifts for a wedding, whilst personalised calendars or mugs make good personalised gifts for tea lovers and people who never remember what day it is! Think about the person and what makes them tick, then you'll have loads of ideas. If that doesn't help you could always look for various personalised gifts online and see if anything fits the bill that way.

Generic Gifts Kill People
Okay, we lied, generic gifts never kill anyone. But they're awful and we wanted to sound dramatic. The truth is that no one will ever die from receiving a football calendar (when they hate football) just because they happen to be a boy, equally no girl will be hospitalised because she got 'another' pink present. But step outside of stereotypes and get your loved ones gifts which really reflect their loves and their passions and you'll make them so happy they might cry.

I remember in my youth it was usually my aunts who got me the most boring and generic presents. It felt as though they didn't know me at all (or realise that I was growing up) when I got sparkly pink make-up sets and hair clips year upon year. My brother got a similar treatment, being that he was a boy, everything arrived in blue wrapping paper and I remember being particularly jealous one year when he got a huge yorkie chocolate egg (yorkie chocolate bars were only for boys!) at Easter time and I got a little tin of dolly mixtures which was painfully dwarfed in comparison.

The point of all this anecdotal evidence is that personalised gifts are best when they reflect the personality of the person you're getting them for. It's no good getting a girl who is a bit of a tom boy some pink hair curlers and it's no good getting a boy who hates football a football annual. Instead, we advise you to do some research and find out what those family members really love!

Surprise People
People love surprises and they don't have to be big ones. Sometimes, getting a present you would never have expected but can definitely use is a good surprise in and of itself. So for a gardener, being given personalised gifts such as an antique apple crate planter which says your name on it or even a personalised door mat to wipe your boots on could be perfect.

As well as getting someone personalised gifts you could throw them a 'personalised' party with their favourite drinks, favourite music and favourite people all invited along. By keeping a party a surprise you make it even more special, too!

Depending on the time of year parties often work best when they compliment the weather. A surprise BBQ is great in Summer, or a traditional hearty pub meal is great in the colder months. In the Spring time you could host a party at a mate's house as a surprise for a mutual friend and in the Autumn, it's best to find somewhere cosy and enjoy some seasonal produce and good wine.

If you plan a surprise party then presents won't be as heavy on your mind, but the more meaningful and personal they are the better, the reception they will get!

Have a Laugh
Some of the best presents will make someone laugh, (not at you for getting it them, thankfully) but out loud with joy because you made such a funny joke. Although we don't think that drinking this much in one go is ever advisable you could get a friend who loves wine a giant wine glass which holds a whole bottle's worth of vino!

If you do go for one of those you might have to invest in some drinking straws too though. That way the receiver can get help from 3 or 4 friends when draining it! Funny personalised gifts are really popular and depending on your friend's sense of humour it shouldn't be too tricky to find something that he or she will really grin about.
