At certain times in our lives we all experience special days that stand out from the rest and some of them are captured in the press or on film. One great way to get nostalgic and reminisce is to buy original newspapers; real authentic editions from the days you loved. Surprisingly, original newspapers don't cost the earth either and they are available for under £40 each no matter how old they are!

They also often come with a certificate which tells the person you're giving it to, why you're giving it to them. They make a great, thoughtful meaningful present and as with all old, precious things only become more impressive with age.

Newspaper Time Warp
Ever wanted to go back in time to the 1950s and see how much the world has changed since then? You might have a few photos of the era and perhaps they're in an old family collection, delicately slotted in to pages of a photo album. Or what about the swinging 60s? Can you remember the Summer of love? How about the mid-80s? If you grew up then it's probably a decade that you loved.

In Hollywood films a time traveller might go and grab a newspaper to see what the date is and work out what decade they're in. They do that for a very good reason; original newspapers tell you a lot about the politics and the mood of the time they were printed but they also tell you about any big important events which have taken place. They are a little magical, because they provide a sample of the politics, attitudes and even photographs of a very specific time.

Obviously, it's impossible to turn back the clock or time travel but there is a way to look at what life was like and what was going on in the world back then, in a very simple and concise way. Pick up a newspaper! You can get original newspapers as gifts and they are great for loads of different special occasions. They make interesting reading and are a very unique and unexpected present.

Birthdays can be made more special if they are commemorated with a newspaper from the day that the person was born for example. Equally, original newspapers from the date of your wedding or the day you met your partner make brilliant wedding anniversary presents and Valentine's gifts.

An Interesting Read
It can be so interesting to see what happened on a specific day several decades ago, what mattered to people then might be different to what matters now. After all, things do change and new laws get passed. Or, even better you might be able to draw meaningful parallels between the news in the 1950s and the news of today by looking at original newspapers around the time of the 1950s recession!

Although it can be nice to give people original newspapers which were printed on the day of their birth it can also be fun to pick out key moments in history which your friends are fond of. An astronaut wannabe must own a copy of a paper reporting on the US moon landing for example, whilst a conspiracy theorist would probably love to own an edition from the day JFK was assassinated. Or a devoted follower of Marilyn Monroe might like a newspaper from the sad day she passed away. There are lots of big events over the years which have captured peoples' imagination and those make brilliant keepsake presents when they're proudly announced in the headlines of original newspapers.

A Cherished Memento
As well as being intensely intriguing and instantly fun the moment you give original newspapers they also make stunning keepsakes and can become cherished mementos over the years. They are often kept with family photographs and other items of sentimental value and they are usually very appreciated by the people who are given them.

One thing that can make original newspapers even more precious is if they're from a day when someone's family or ancestors featured in the news. Often people who are studying genealogy can find reverences to distant ancestors who won competitions, were awarded medals or even committed interesting crimes.

Reading old papers can make you feel like some sort of detective, investigating the past. It can also make you laugh, because a lot of the advertisements placed in old papers have aged interestingly. For example many advertisements for Bovril (printed before advertising laws came in to effect) claim to cure influenza!
