With Mother's Day fast approaching our thoughts are turning towards mum and everything she's ever done for us. And while dads are equally important, until Father's Day comes along, it's just not their time!

For those with mothers living in the UK, Mother's Day always occurs on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent. Interestingly, in the UK, what we now know as Mother's Day actually falls at the same time as Mothering Sunday and while the two days more or less now refer to the same thing - and involve the exchange of Mothers Day Gifts - the two traditions have different origins. The origins of Mothering Sunday are believed to originate around the 16th century, when individuals would return for a special service, to what could be described as their mother church.

In contrast, the modern celebration of Mother's Day has a number of suggested origins, including the idea that it developed from the ancient Greek tradition of mother worship this may or may not have involved the tradition of exchanging Mothers Day Gifts.

Elsewhere in the world, Mothers Day traditions can differ significantly, although a large number observe the day in a way that reflects the traditions as they have evolved in Europe and North America - including the tradition of giving Mother's Day Gifts. In Japan, the Mother's Day tradition reportedly started as a way to commemorate the birthday of Emperor Akihito's mother. While in China Mother's Day became linked with the idea of helping mothers with financial difficulties this occurred in 1987.
