The best part about bedtime was always being read a story, wasn't it? There was nothing better than getting snuggled up under the covers, closing your eyes and being immersed in the land of fairy tales! So why not relive your childhood and pass on a piece of history to your little ones with this classic Ladybird 'The Elves & The Shoemaker' book?
First published in 1965, retold by Vera Southgate and illustrated by Robery Lumley, the story tells of a poor shoemaker and his wife who are struggling to keep their business afloat and soon only have enough leather left to make one pair of shoes.
When the shoemaker wakes in the morning, he discovers someone has made a perfect pair of shoes and left them on his bench. When the pair of shoes sells for double their price, he buys enough leather for two more pairs of shoes.
The next morning, the same thing happens again! Soon, the shoemaker and his wife become rich but still don't know who is making the shoes. So one night before Christmas, they hide in the workshop and discover small elves appearing after midnight to come and make the shoes! The elves are dressed in raggedy clothes and are barefoot, so the shoemaker and his wife decide to make them clothes to repay them for their hard work, just in time for Christmas!
