We've Gone Pie Crazy...

As one of the weekly themes of our favourite baking show, pie week is one of our favourites! And it’s no surprise really – what’s not to love about tucking into a pastry-topped pie, fresh from the oven, to warm you up on a rainy day?! 

With pies on the mind, we asked around the office to see what everyone’s favourite filling is, just in time to give you some inspiration for pie week! We found that there’s a definite 50/50 split between sweet and savoury pie fillings, so the question is… which side will you choose?

The daddy of all pies, surely?! A different take on the more classic steak and ale pie, we love the tender steak with the punch of the warm, gooey Stilton finished off with a buttery pastry topping. Delish!

Supermarket versions just won’t make the cut! We’re talking hot water crust pastry, pork loin and fresh herbs. Garnished with pickle or on the side of a Ploughman’s – once you go homemade, you’ll never go back…

You really can’t go wrong with a slice of cheese and onion pie encased in flaky, shortcrust pastry, can you? The accompaniments caused another split among our office, with the beans or peas debate. Our verdict? Delicious with petit pois and potatoes (just definitely not with baked beans!)

A classic combination! Creamy mushrooms and tender chicken (perhaps with a sprig of parsley for good measure!) and topped with a buttery puff pastry is a match made in heaven, isn’t it? Perfect comfort food for those blustery winter nights!

If it’s a lyric in a football anthem then it’s good enough for us! Relive fond memories spent at the match and coming home to a piping hot plate of meat pie. Served with beetroot or red cabbage (again, depending on which side you’re on!)

Think locally sourced produce surrounded by sweet pastry and served with lashings of vanilla custard, homemade of course! Apples and blackberries go hand in hand when it comes to fruit pies, so it’s really no surprise that it made the cut, is it?!

Gooseberries are renowned for their bitter taste, but served in a sweet pastry case you can guarantee a taste sensation! The sharpness of the berries is contrasted by the sweetness of the pastry, and it counts towards one of your five a day, right?

Blowtorches at the ready! Drift away into lemon-y heaven, with clouds of fluffy, caramelised meringue all finished with a perfect pastry crust. Seconds, anyone?

When they’re in season, a cherry pie is a must on any menu, isn’t it? Add a dash of vanilla and serve with crème fraiche for a dessert that will leave your guests with full tummies and smiling faces!
